What Is Bhramari?
Bhramari pranayama — named after the Indian black bee (bhramari) — is a breathing technique where you hum steadily on the exhale. The vibration produced in the throat, sinuses and skull creates a direct physical stimulation of the vagus nerve, producing deep calm without requiring any breath holds.
This makes it uniquely accessible. If you can breathe in and hum out, you can do Bhramari. There is no timing to master, no ratio to maintain — just breathe and hum.
The Science
Humming increases nitric oxide production in the paranasal sinuses by 15-fold compared to quiet exhalation (Weitzberg & Lundberg, 2002). Nitric oxide is a vasodilator and bronchodilator — it opens blood vessels and airways. The vibration also directly stimulates the vagus nerve through its auricular branch, which innervates the ear canal and outer ear.
Studies show Bhramari reduces heart rate, blood pressure and sympathetic activation within minutes. It has been specifically studied for tinnitus relief, with humming at specific frequencies shown to reduce perceived ringing. It also significantly improves pulmonary function in COPD patients.
How To Do It
1. Inhale (4 seconds)
Breathe in deeply through your nose. Fill your lungs gently.
2. Hum Exhale (8+ seconds)
Close your mouth and exhale while producing a steady, low-pitched humming sound — like the buzz of a bee. Feel the vibration in your throat, face and skull. Let the hum last as long as your exhale naturally allows.
Benefits
- Deepest calm without holds — no breath retention required, yet powerfully calming
- Sinus health — 15x nitric oxide boost clears sinuses naturally
- Tinnitus relief — specific frequencies reduce perceived ringing
- Blood pressure reduction — rapid, measurable drops
- Headache relief — vibration can ease tension headaches
- Zero learning curve — if you can hum, you can do this
When To Use It
Before bed for deep relaxation. When you have sinus congestion or a tension headache. To calm anxiety without needing to count or time anything. As a wind-down after stressful situations. Especially effective in a quiet space where you can fully immerse in the vibration.
